FLAT BAMBU SHIMANE : A New Material of Flat-board Bamboo
At the installation in the historical courtyard hallway of Universita degli Studi di Milano will be for INTERNI’s 20th anniversary edition, sponsored by SHUKOH Co.,Ltd., “FLAT BAMBU SHIMANE” series of various furnishings ultilizing the new flat-boarded bamboo material was announced and displayed.
Bamboo is not only used for materials, but its young bamboo shoots are acutally edible during early stage in the ground. After 3 to 4 years of rapid growth sprouting from the ground becomes a full-grown bamboo. It is said that its material can be used for 100 years. In this project, ordinary bamboos, which are round and curved in nature, are highly value added and reborn as new material for the future, by technology that can straighten and flatten out into flat boards.
This is only possible with WOODSTYLE Co.,Ltd.(Shimane Prefecture,Japan)’s new and innovative technology that can leave the bamboo’s subtle surface characteristic such as nodes and fiber grain patterns intact while completely straightening and flattening out the round curved bamboos into strong flat-boards. With Japanese bamboos, currently the technology can manufacture flat bamboo boards of 70 to 100 millimeters wide and up to 2 meters in length.
The project has strong ecological potential and aspects, since using bamboo as resource that can rapidly regenerate in only 3 to 4 years and at the same time, can absorb and fix huge amounts of carbon dioxides (CO2) during its natural growth. This FLAT BAMBU SHIMANE which is a fusion of nature and technology, has proven that with the power of design existing materials can be reborn into an innovative material with new possibilities.
